I-SEA aims to step up recycling in Ganges core Gulf Islands Driftwood Article ~ July 23, 2008

It has been created to meet a recognized need for a network geared to link the growing number of “green” design and building options available in the community. The goal is to provide accessible information for the general public, particularly for those wishing to design and build more green homes and those wishing to get involved in the eco-design and building movement.

April 12, 2008 - I-SEA Reminder the "The 8th Annual Mow Down Pollution Event" is back!

Bring your working or non-working gas-powered mower or trimmer to any Home Depot location between April 17 and 27, 2008 and receive up to a $100 instant rebate on the purchase of a new push-reel, electric, rechargeable or low-emission mower or trimmer.  The old mower or trimmer will be recycled free of cost and your actions will help reduce ground level pollution.

March 14, 2008 - Now available – compact fluorescent light bulb (CFLs) recycling at The Home Depot!
CFL bulbs should not be disposed of with regular household waste so bring your expired CFLs to any The Home Depot store, and be assured that each bulb will be recycled safely.  At all Home Depot stores across Canada, customers will find a CFL bulb recycling unit located at the entrance by the special services desk. Customers can simply bring in their expired CFL bulbs, place them in one of the plastic bags provided and deposit it into the display. For more information visit homedepot.ca/EcoOptions.

December 2007 - The BC government is proposing to add new green requirements to the BC Building Code and is currently soliciting feedback on these changes. The deadline for providing input is December 21.

The code revisions focus on:
--Energy Efficiency Requirements for Single Family Houses and Smaller
Multi-Family Residential, Commercial and Industrial Buildings;
---Energy Efficiency Requirements for High-Rise Multi-Family Residential
Buildings and Larger Industrial, Commercial and Institutional Buildings;
---Efficiency Requirements.

New Centre for Sustainability Opens on Salt Spring Island

There is a new Center for Sustainability in the Gulf Islands. The Institute for Sustainability Education & Action (I-SEA) has opened a large office in downtown Ganges, Salt Spring Island. The incubator space, conference room and resource center is open for business! We have rented all offices except one to non-profits and are looking for one more partner. This is a learning, collaborative and entrepreneurial space where people can come together to strengthen and unite resources, talents and skills under the umbrella of sustainability.
