Policy
The Institute for Sustainability Education & Action policy commits to:
- Refining and promoting community sustainability on Salt Spring Island and beyond through education and action oriented initiatives.
- Helping other individuals and groups (non-profits, government and business) working toward regional sustainability connect with each other to further their work.
- Reporting and improving upon sustainability practices, as measured by their long-term quality-of-life benefits.
- Sponsoring community workshops, conferences, and other events for all who share these goals.
Reportable Actions to Date:
- Repainted office space with eco-paint.
- Purchased area rugs in conference room and halls that are 100% organic and low chemical use wool.
- Using recycled paper, with a goal to use only 100% post-consumer recycled paper.
- Re-lamped the inside of the building with energy-efficient lights, with a goal to replace outdoor lighting as soon as possible.
- Using all green cleaning products, toilet paper, and paper towel.
- Sponsoring a speaker series this spring on sustainability and community planning topics.
- Completing a Salt Spring Green Map for residents and tourists to utilize when visiting and or purchasing local products.
- Strengthening the community by working together with local non-profits on joint-proposals for funding sustainability projects.
- Sponsoring the Eco-Home Tour Volunteer Appreciation Friday night reception; Music at the ROOTS forum, UNBC Farmer’s Market Study on SSI, 2 Sustainable Tourism Roundtables, and Green Business Award to Harbour House 2006.
- Volunteering to sit on 2 Official Community Plan Focus Groups: Energy Strategy Task Force & Sustainable Economy, Jobs and Tourism.
